Leaf Bags

With Public help leaves from the abundance of trees lining Salt Lake City streets are environmentally disposed of.

Salt Lake City’s leaf bag program helps keep city streets, sidewalks and stormwater drains clear of fallen and decaying leaves.

When the autumn leaves begin to fall, it time again for the orange leaf bags.  Drive any street and you’ll see piles of leaf bags stacked in the parking strip for pick up by City Street workers. The leaf bag program, co-sponsored by Salt Lake City’s Pubic Services and Public Utilities Departments, helps keep city streets, sidewalks and stormwater drains clear of fallen and decaying leaves.

Over 550,000 orange bags with the city's logo will be distributed beginning November 1, 2006. The leaf bag pickup will begin on November 1, 2006 and end December 22, 2006. .

Bagged leaves collected through this program are composted at the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility.

Having the leaves bagged and hauled away to the Solid Waste Management Facility is the most efficient method of gathering and disposing of the leaves, says public utilities deputy director Jeff Niermeyer, noting that keeping the gutters and strormdrains clear of leaves prevents the deterioration of water quality, and street flooding and icing problems.
